John A. Bertelson, MD, FAAN, is a behavioral neurologist in the UT Medicine Comprehensive Memory Center. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and other neurological disorders of cognition. Additionally, Dr. Bertelson is an assistant professor in both the Dell Medical School Department of Neurology and the Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Bertelson is also an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Texas Tech School of Medicine and the Co-Medical Director of the Comprehensive Memory Clinic at the Garrison Institute of Aging
Dr. Bertelson earned dual bachelor’s degrees from Rice University and earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He completed a residency in neurology at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, a fellowship in behavioral neurology at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and a second fellowship in neuroimaging at DENT Neurologic Institute. Prior to enrolling at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, he worked briefly as a chemical engineer.
Dr. Bertelson also serves as an associate professor in the Texas Tech School of Medicine Department of Neurology. He is an investigator on numerous studies of experimental agents used in patients with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia due to Alzheimer's disease and has frequently been recognized as one of Austin's Top Doctors in Austin Monthly Magazine. His clinical interests include cognitive disorders, traumatic brain injury, and neuroimaging. He is a member of the American Society of Neuroimaging, the American Academy of Neurology, and the Texas Neurological Association.
